Purchased Your First Home with a Lot of Trees? How to Keep the Trees Healthy

If you just purchased your first home and there are a lot of trees on the property, you may not know how to properly care for the trees. If so, keep reading for some tips on keeping them healthy.

Trim the Trees

If trees become overgrown, they will not grow well and may even start to show signs of having problems. The first place that is affected when a tree is overgrown is the canopy, which is the top part of the tree. When it rains water struggles to flow through a thick canopy. This means your trees will not get enough water and they could die eventually. The trees may have branches that have grown too large, and these branches could fall.

Hire a tree trimming service to trim your trees for you instead of doing it on your own. If you do try to trim the trees yourself and do it improperly you may injure your trees. Trimming trees can also be dangerous and a tree service will have the experience and the right equipment to do the job properly.

Fertilize and Water the Trees

You should give your trees fertilizer as they need the proper nutrients to grow well and stay healthy. Fertilizing will also help them be much more resilient against pests and diseases. The type of fertilizer you use will depend on the type of trees that you have in your yard. A garden center can help you purchase the right type and tell you how much fertilizer to give.

If it does not rain in your area for days at a time, then you need to water your trees also. If you get around one inch of water each week this may be enough to keep your trees healthy — depending on the species.

Use Mulch

Mulch can be purchased at garden centers or you can even make it on your own. Mulch is made of things like wood chips, grass clippings, pine needles, tree bark, and gravel. Mulch will help keep your trees watered longer. Mulching will also help if your soil is compacted. Soil compaction can happen if a lot of cars, trucks, or people are around the trees.

Putting mulch around your trees can also help cut down on weeds. This is because the mulch drowns out the sun that the weeds need to grow.
